People gather on Place Bellecour, an historic square in the center of Lyon, during La Fete des Lumieres 2009, a festival of lights held annually since 1852 on December 8, to celebrate the feast of the Immaculate Conception of the Virgin Mary. The celebration was established as a universal feast in 1476 by Pope Sixtus IV.
